Alison Moyet was the singer in a punk band called The Vandals, based in her home-town of Basildon in 1978; Robert Marlow was also in the band under the moniker ‘the guitarist with no name’ – he was childhood friends with Vince Clarke and Andy Fletcher from Boys Brigade – who formed Depeche Mode with another friend Martin Gore.
